Social media is easily the topic we get the most questions about. How do I make social media work for me? Is there a best time of day to post? Why are people not engaging with us via social? Social media management is a beast all by itself, but these 3 tips can help get you off on the right foot:

1. Sync your usernames

This step seems obvious, but you’d be surprised how many companies are missing the mark. Making sure that your usernames are uniformed across the board not only makes you look more professional, but it makes it much easier for customers to find you. It also makes it easy for promotional materials, because your usernames are identical for all outlets.

2. Figure out when to post

There’s an incredibly easy way to decide when to post your content on social media. Go to your Facebook business page, and click on “Insights” at the top toolbar. You will then look for the link that says “Posts” on the left sidebar. You’ll see a screen like the one below, which has a graph showing you when your audience is online. Find your peak hours, and try to focus your social media posts for that time window.

3. Unique messages are key

Almost all social media platforms integrate with each other, making it very easy to automatically post on everything with one click. While the ease and convenience of this feature can be tempting, it’s not the best route to take. Different platforms have different ways that they deliver content – Instagram is primarily pictures, with no ability (yet) to link to websites within the picture caption. Twitter only gives you 140 characters (although that rule will be changing soon) and puts a heavier emphasis on hashtags. Facebook allows you to attach events and other cool features. Each platform is different, and therefore each deserves their own messaging. When you post something across all of your different accounts, you should make sure to write a slightly different version for each. Pain in the butt? Yep. But you’ll be amazed at how it can boost your engagement.
